Voices overheard at Bangalore

A lighter (but not always) look at who said what at Asia Source 2005. In the words of Denis 'Jaromil' Rojo, Cheekay Cinco, Marcell Mars (Nenad Romic), Allen 'Gunner' Gunn, Marek Tuszynski, Pi Reyes, Wire Lunghabo James, Sunil Abraham and Colin Charles.

I'm South Italian, but have been quite normadic for awhile. -- Free software developer Denis 'Jaromil' Rojo, the maintainer of dyne:bolic, HasciiCam MuSE and FreeJ, who also calls himself "a nomadic rastafari".

Part of me wants to learn how to make Wiki and text (usage) more meaningful. The other part of me is really fed up with text. We need to go beyond the verbal discourse. -- Cheekay Cinco, from the Philippines. She manages SheBlogs, a FLOSS journaling and web publishing tool targeted towards encouraging Filipino women to publish content on the Internet. See more details of SheBlogs at http://www.actionapps.org/tikiwiki/tiki-index.php?page=SheBlogs

Free content is good for your ego in a good sense. People realise you have some good material, and recognise you for it. In Croatia, (free) music has also got recognised by the main national TV station, and has been Number One on the Top 10 of the most popular radio station. -- Marcell Mars (Nenad Romic), Croatia. One of the founders of Multimedia Institute mi2 and net.culture club mam in Zagreb. http://www.mi2.hr

While you're in the lab, avoid the temptation to check email or to rearrange icons. Checking email while other people are speaking is bad karma. -- Allen 'Gunner' Gunn, co-director of Aspiration, which promotes effective software development for the nonprofit and civil society sector, better known for his music on the banjo.

The bazaar is just a space where you can have Turkish tea, and talk to Patrice (Reimens). You don't have to talk to Patrice... On the fourth day of the camp, the bazaar becomes a place for people to share skills -- Marek Tuszynski of Poland, co-founder of Tactical Tech -- an art historian by education and IT and NGO consultant by profession.

It will be a disservice if we continue harping on how women are disenfranchised (vis a vis technology). Lot of gains have come in the last 10 years, that actually put women and technology closer together. --Pi Reyes, Association for Progressive Communications Women's Networking Support Programme and current technical director of WomensHub.

In Africa, there has been some remarkable progress over using GNU Linux at the server end. Most ISPs make a quote for the Linux server. They know they can set it up and leave it, without anything happening for the next two to three years. At most, it will need a reboot. -- Wire Lunghabo James of Uganda, council member of the Free and Open Source Software Foundation for Africa (FOSSFA)

This (low shared bandwidth availability at the camp) is a Digital Divide simulation. But the venue is designed to be environmentally friendly. You have solar-water heated, and wastes are locally regenerated.... If a full coconut falls on your head, it could kill you. Most of the snakes are not poisonous. In a campus like this, there maybe one or two cobras. -- Mahiti.org founder Sunil Abraham, currently on sabbatical with APDIP/UNDP as manager of the International Open Source Network, in his deadpan serious style, cautioning participants about their new settings.

We need more code than we need advocacy. -- Colin Charles http://www.bytebot.net/ who is experienced with The Fedora Project and OpenOffice.org and has authored books at Lulu.com on these subjects, while still in his early 'twenties.

"what happened was that i was interdicted to held sessions together with participants and the second day i was asked to leave by USA infiltrates in a free software event organized for asian participants here in Bangalore, the Asiasource convention.

the USA infiltrates are not mentioned on the program of the event nor they are involved in any way with Free and Open Source software, they had the purpose to blackmail me following an hidden agenda."

Gunner, introduce your self by name and your emotion right now in one word.
