Partners
Africa Source is a collaboration between three organisations; SchoolNet Namibia, the AllAfrica Foundation and Tactical Tech.
The AllAfrica Foundation (Washington, Lagos, Johannesburg) has been among the most active supporters of F/OSS development and community in Africa, helping to organize the Free and Open Source Software Foundation for Africa, for example, and participating in the Ford Foundation Special Initiative for Africa.
SchoolNet Namibia is a nonprofit provider of internet service, hardware and training to the nation's schools. Since February, 2000, close to 250 schools have received free hardware, free training on the Linux operating system and subsidized telephone service to help get the nation's young people online. It's all part of the plan to empower youth through internet access.
The Tactical Technology Collective (Amsterdam) has a track record building bridges between technologists and civil society organizations in Eastern Europe and Central Asia, and organized the Summer Source Croatia event; a software summit for NGOs, on which this meeting is partially modeled.
Other partner organisations: Several organizations involved in F/OSS and Africa development work are providing input into the Africa Source planning process and helping to shape the event's agenda and goals. Some of these include: the Free and Open Source Software Foundation for Africa (FOSSFA), the Association for Progressive Communications and the Open Society Institute West Africa.
This event is supported by the Open Society Initiative Southern Africa, the Open Society Institute and the government of Namibia.
