We are seeking a dedicated individual to help run one of the leading organisations bringing new technologies to rights advocacy worldwide.

Responsible for ensuring the smooth and efficient running of the organisation, the Director of Operations, will play a crucial role in anchoring the organisation and helping it realise its full potential. Working closely with the Executive Director, the Director of Operations will lay the foundations that will enable Tactical Tech to continue its innovative and dynamic work.

Overview

Tactical Tech is an international NGO working to enhance campaigning and advocacy through the use of new technologies.

Tactical Tech believes that new technologies, such as the internet and mobile phones, have significant potential to enhance the work of campaigners and advocates, giving them the tools to gather and analyse information and the means to turn that information into action. With offices in Brighton - UK and Bangalore - India, our organisation works across the global South to train, consult, and mentor rights advocates working on Human Rights and Marginalised Community issues. We have a consultancy and staff base of fifteen, an annual turnover of 800,000 Euros and 15 projects in operation.

We are looking for a highly organised and experienced individual, dedicated to human rights and marginalised community issues, who would enjoy working collaboratively with a dynamic, fast pace team and welcome the challenge of playing a key role in ensuring the smooth and efficient running of the organisation.

The successful candidate will be an operations professional with a proven track record in financial management, managing HR and project delivery.

Job Description

Director of Operations

About the position:
The Director of Operations is a new position, created to meet the changing needs of the organisation as it moves away from its project-to-project based structure and develops into a strong independent NGO. The Director of Operations will be responsible for implementing and managing organisational change and for overseeing the day-to-day running of the organisation at the administrative, legal and financial level.

This post reports to the Executive Director. The Director of Operations will be responsible for Tactical Tech's finance and admin staff.

Key areas of work

  • Overseeing organisational and legal structure:
    • Provisioning for and managing legal issues
    • Assisting in setting up and implementing organisational policies
    • Ensuring efficient running and management of our two offices (Brighton and Bangalore)
    • Setting up and tracking contracts (MoU's, consultancies etc)
    • Leading and managing an organisational knowledge base
  • Human resources:
    • Overseeing human resources needs (such as vacation time, contracts, recruitment, planning)
    • Recruiting and managing interns
  • Finance:
    • Day-to-day finance supervision working with the Finance Manager
    • Producing management budgets
    • Assisting with financial reviews and planning
    • Coordinating audits
  • Managing Tactical Tech's deliverables:
    • Maintaining the organisational calendar of projects and events
    • Working with staff to plan workloads and ensure the timely delivery of projects and reports
    • Tracking grants and reports
    • Contributing to planning and management of the organisation

This is a full time post (40 hours per week) with occassional international travel.

This position will be based in Brighton, United Kingdom or Bangalore, India depending on the suitability of the candidate. Only applicants with valid working permits for one of these locations should apply.

Person Specification

  • The successful candidate must have the following skills and experience:
    • At least three years experience; acting as a Deputy within an organisation (or a similar 'Director of Operations' role). Managing others working within an NGO/ Charity.
    • Excellent financial skills and extensive experience creating and managing complex budgets
    • Good attention to detail, the ability to multi-task and enjoy problem solving on the fly
    • Flexibility and excellent communication skills
    • Excellent written and spoken English
    • Enjoy working collaboratively and within a dynamic and (geographically) dispersed team
    • International experience
    • A demonstrated commitment to Human Rights and Social Justice
    • A demonstrated interest in new technologies
    • A relevant degree to at least BA level
  • The ideal candidate will have:
    • An MBA, Public Sector MBA or equivalent experience
    • Experience managing and handling grants from donors and/or managing donations
    • Experience working within the field of international development, or with NGOs/advocates in the global South
